Lawn Care Tips
Frequency of cuts/mows
Many people often wonder how often a lawn should mowed. In our opinion, once a week is best for most lawns. One rule of thumb lawn care specialists often follow is to never cut more than 1/3 of the height of the grass blade off at a time, so if you notice your lawn is growing faster, a little bit more frequent cuts may be necessary. Following this rule helps prevent from removing any of the grass stem which could result in loss of some of the bright green lushness desired for lawns. If this has happened to you, don’t worry, as the stem and blade of the grass grow back, the lawn will return to its original, beautiful color. should the lawn be mowed?
Direction of cut/mows
You may notice how baseball diamond and golf courses often change the direction of their cuts. Lawn care specialists typically recommend that a lawn is mowed in a different direction each mowing (i.e. parallel to house then perpendicular to house or on a diagonal). This helps maintain the health and lushness of a lanw.
When to prune
Many customers often wonder when is the appropriate time to prune plants and shrubs. While it varies by type of plant and temperature, there are some rules of thumb you can follow. For example, ornamental grasses should be cut in early spring, semiwoody perennials should be cut anytime in the winter or in early spring, evergreens with broad leaves should have stems with damaged foliage pruned out in the winter and be sheared in the spring when foliage will be replaced quickly, and evergreen shrubs should be cut and shaped in the spring or early summer when foliage will be replaced quickly.
